Retrofitting Older Homes
Our Director, Simon Baker, was recently invited by The Modern House to contribute to their Thoughtful Living series, where he shared his insights on retrofitting. As the UK strives to achieve net zero by 2050, it's crucial to focus on decarbonizing our existing housing stock, given that approximately 80% of homes will already be built by that time.
Retrofitting our historic homes with care can have a significant impact, potentially reducing carbon emissions by up to 84%. Not only is this approach environmentally friendly, but it also proves to be more cost-effective compared to rebuilding, as it requires fewer materials while preserving the existing structure, leading to immediate environmental and financial savings.
The article highlights the inspiring work of Stolon Studio at their sustainable re-use project, The Parks. This project exemplifies what can be accomplished when retrofitting is thoughtfully considered. Additionally, the insights shared by Graham Bizley of Prewett Bizley Architects and Ben Ridley of Architecture for London offer further valuable perspectives on this critical topic.
